1. Gabis Arboretum, Valparaiso

Tucked away in Valparaiso, as part of Purdue Northwest, Gabis Arboretum is a nature lover’s paradise. Damien and Rita Gabis founded the arboretum. Beginning in 1990, Dr. and Mrs. Gabis purchased 300 acres that now make up the beautiful Gabis Arboretum.
Today, the arboretum is a Northwest Indiana treasure, with nearly six miles of trails, stunning gardens, and the most extensive oak tree collection in Indiana; this is a true hidden gem in NWI.
But what really sets it apart is its award-winning garden railway. Imagine miniature trains chugging through meticulously landscaped gardens – it’s a sight that’ll delight both kids and adults alike! You can also Enjoy a leisurely drive through Gabis Arboretum while the docent shares insights about the plants and animals that call the Arboretum home. 2. Shrine of Christ’s Passion, St. John

Whether you’re religious or not, the Shrine of Christ’s Passion is a sight to behold and something genuinely unique in Northwest Indiana. This hidden gem features a prayer trail with 40 life-size bronze sculptures depicting scenes from Christ’s journey. It’s a peaceful place for reflection and appreciating incredible artistry. This half-mile trail is the culmination of 10 year’s worth of construction and cost ten million dollars to complete.
This project began in 2001 and has become a destination for the faithful and art lovers alike. Music plays throughout the walking journey, making it something to behold. Also, be sure to visit their Gift Shoppe which is over 12,000 square feet and fill with many unique gifts to choose from
3. Friendship Botanic Gardens, Michigan City

Step into a world of natural beauty at Friendship Botanic Gardens. With its diverse plant collections and tranquil walking trails, it’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Keep an eye out for their seasonal events! These gardens, located in Northern La Porte County, are open to the public May through October 31st, allowing visitors to view the changing of the seasons as they walk through the beautiful gardens and trails.
Friendship Botanic Gardens also hosts many events throughout the season, from music festivals to community events. The gardens are also a popular destination for weddings and private events.
4. LaPorte County Historical Society Museum, LaPorte:

The La Porte County Historical Society, which was opened on January 30, 1906, has its roots in earlier efforts such as the La Porte Library and Natural History Association, which was founded in 1863. In 2003, the Society found a new home in the former Door Prairie Auto Museum, a Colonial-style building with a clock tower replica of the second La Porte County Courthouse. The current La Porte County Historical Society Museum, which includes historical period rooms, the W.A. Jones Weapons Collection, and Dr. Peter Kesling’s automobile collection, celebrated its Grand Opening on September 30, 2006, marking the Society’s 100th Anniversary.
History buffs, rev your engines! This museum houses an impressive collection of vintage cars alongside fascinating exhibits on local history. It’s like stepping back in time right here in NWI.
5. Three Dune Challenge, Indiana Dunes State Park

For the adventurers among us, tackle the 3 Dune Challenge at Indiana Dunes State Park. Climb 552 vertical feet across the three tallest dunes—it’s a workout with a view you won’t forget! This is a great outdoor event that is open year-round. Completing this epic challenge is a legend of the region and a badge of honor.
The challenge is made of a trail 1.5 miles long in the beautiful Indiana Dunes. The views are beyond breathtaking as you conquer this region’s badge of honor. Be sure to stop by the Indiana Dunes Gift Shop to get your “I Survived the 3-Dune Challenge” merch.
6. Community Veterans Memorial, Munster

Pay tribute to our veterans at this beautifully designed memorial in Munster. It’s a moving experience that reminds us of the sacrifices made for our freedom. Beginning in 1999, Donald S. Powers and Edward P. Robinson formed a committee, and the Community Veterans Memorial was created. Their motto is to remember, to educate, and to challenge.
The memorial features several bronze and granite sculptures depicting military conflicts of the 20th century. This moving memorial recognizes the following wars: World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk.
7. Albanese Candy, Merrillville

Satisfy your sweet tooth at Albanese Candy. This local gem isn’t just a candy store – it’s a wonderland of confections where you can see how some of your favorite treats are made. Like a real-life candy land, Albanese Candy has sweet treats and confectionaries to satisfy just about everyone. This is a true gem in Northwest Indiana. They are world-famous for their gummy-style candies and their chocolates are a true treasure.
8. Harvest Tyme Family Farm, Lowell

Harvest Tyme Family Farm, located on Grant Street near Indiana Route 2, stands on land that has been in the same family since the mid-1800s when James and Florence Craft purchased the homestead in Orchard Grove. For generations, the land was farmed by family members until 1958, when other interests led them to pursue different occupations. In 2007, the current owner, a descendant of the original settlers, revived the family’s farming tradition by growing pumpkins on a large scale, cultivating approximately five acres each year. Now in its 17th season, Harvest Tyme Pumpkin Patch has grown significantly, welcoming visitors each fall and allowing the owner to share his family’s rich farming history with guests.
The farm’s success is attributed to the support of family, friends, employees, and loyal visitors. The current generation looks forward to continuing this agricultural legacy and helping families create their own fall traditions at Harvest Tyme Pumpkin Patch. When fall rolls around, Harvest Tyme is the place to be. With corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and tons of family-friendly activities, it’s autumn fun at its finest. Additionally, you can find Construction Tyme, Dino Tyme, Unicorn Tyme, Ffall Ffestival Ppumpkin Ppatch, Ppumpkin Gglow and Ttrail of Llights, and Christmas Tyme Lights attractions throughout the seasons. They are unique and amazing events!
9. The Rensselaer Art Walk, Rensselaer, IN.

Located in Jasper County, The Rensselaer Art Walk showcases stunning murals by international artists throughout downtown Rensselaer, Indiana, with additional works in nearby Remington.
Visitors can explore the city’s charming alleys behind W. Washington St., starting at eMbers Venue and continuing past Van Rensselaer Street, to discover an array of colorful artworks and hidden gems.
This walkable experience offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy local eateries, browse small shops, and visit nearby attractions like Fenwick Farms Brewing Co. in Rensselaer or Carpenter Creek Cellars Winery in Remington. 10. Michigan City Lighthouse, Michigan City

Last, walk down the pier to the edge of the Michigan City Lighthouse for breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and, on a clear day, the Chicago skyline. It’s a perfect spot for photos and learning about our maritime history. Built in 1904 this local icon has guided ships into the harbor at Michigan City.
You can access the lighthouse through beautiful Washington Park. Also in this park is a stunning tower inside the Michigan City Zoo, which was initially completed as a WPA project.
