Aligning Your 2025 Business Goals with Purpose: A Strategic Planning Session

Key Takeaways:

  • Start with your organization’s “why.”
  • Revisit your mission and values statements, letting them guide your planning.
  • Break down your year by quarter, and set realistic timelines.
  • Make sure to consider your dependencies to achieve your goals.

I recently sat down with a fellow business owner who specializes in strategic communications planning for what I thought would be a straightforward goal-setting session for 2025. I had my goals in mind, but I needed some guidance in laying them out strategically that would result in accomplishment for this year. This planning meeting turned into so much more than simply goal-setting for 2025, this meeting turned into a profound reminder about the importance of mission-driven planning.

As we wrote down my goals for 2025 on a whiteboard, my strategic planner paused and she asked me when was the last time I’d revisited my business’s mission and values statements. Simon Sinek’s concept of “Start with Why” resonated deeply here. My planning partner walked me through this concept. She explained that your business’s why should be the foundation that shapes every decision and objective, especially goal setting and strategic planning.

We paused our planning session and spent some time reconnecting with my business’s core purpose. This wasn’t wasted time – it was essential groundwork.  We continued to use the whiteboard, where we worked through the concept of why, what, and how and aligned them with my goals for 2025. Every goal we subsequently set aligned with this fundamental why.

Once we had this clarity, the planning process transformed. We broke 2025 into quarters, working backward from our annual objectives. This strategic approach forced me to consider dependencies – which goals relied on others being completed first? What resources needed to be in place? Which initiatives would require longer lead times? Who would I need to consider making these goals realities in 2025?

Together, we worked to create a strategic roadmap that felt both empowering and achievable. Each of my goals now had a clearer purpose, connecting directly to our mission and values as a company. More importantly, we had tangible timelines that accounted for dependencies and resource requirements.

For fellow business owners diving into 2025 planning, I urge you to start with your why. Revisit your mission and values statements. Let them guide your goal-setting process. Then, break down your year by quarter, considering dependencies and timelines realistically.

This approach took a little more time initially, but it created a purposeful, achievable roadmap that will truly serve my business’s mission. As I evaluated this planning session and looked at the strategic plan we created for 2025, I was pleased with what we’d accomplished, and I wanted to share this approach with all of you for your own strategic planning.
