There’s something magical about watching the sun sink into the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange, pink, and purple. As the sun sets on 2024, we wanted to share a small list of the best spots to watch the last sunset in 2024 in Northwest Indiana. This region’s unique blend of lakefront vistas and rural landscapes offers some of the most breathtaking sunset viewing locations in the Midwest. What better way to bid 2024 a farewell than to take in the last sunset of the year?
Here’s your guide to finding the perfect spot to end your day.
Washington Park Boardwalk to Lighthouse Pier, Michigan City

Standing proudly along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, Michigan City’s Washington Park Boardwalk and Pier offers one of the most photogenic sunset views in the region. The historic lighthouse silhouetted against the setting sun creates a scene worthy of a postcard. The elevated pier provides an unobstructed view of the horizon, while the surrounding beach offers plenty of space to set up chairs or spread out a blanket. During summer months, watch as sailboats drift past, their profiles dramatic against the golden sky. If the weather is too cold, there is a large parking lot where you can take in the sunset from inside your warm vehicle if needed.
Beverly Shores – Kemil Beach

Kemil Beach, part of the Indiana Dunes National Park at Beverly Shores, provides a more secluded sunset experience. This hidden gem offers pristine shoreline views without the larger crowds found at some other Lake Michigan beaches. The dune grass swaying in the evening breeze adds a beautiful natural element to your sunset photos. The beach’s east-west orientation creates perfect conditions for watching the sun sink directly into the lake, creating a spectacular reflection on the water. In the summer, the sun sets right behind the Chicago skyline in the distance, which you can usually see clearly on a clear day. This spot, too, allows for on-the-beach viewing, or you can view the sunset from the warmth of your vehicle if needed.
Portage Lakefront Park

The modern pavilion at Portage Lakefront Park serves as an excellent vantage point for sunset viewing. The breakwater provides a unique perspective, allowing visitors to walk out over the water for an immersive sunset experience. The park’s elevated dune areas offer alternative viewing spots, and the paved trails make it easily accessible. The industrial skyline to the west creates an interesting contrast with nature’s display.
Gabis Arboretum

This great spot is unfortunately not open on New Year’s Eve this year, but we still wanted to include it for another time because this is a truly beautiful spot to take in the sunset.
For a different kind of sunset experience, Gabis Arboretum outside of Valparaiso offers a unique inland perspective. The sprawling grounds provide multiple vantage points where you can watch the sun set behind majestic trees and native prairie grasses. During peak bloom seasons, the sunset colors complement the arboretum’s diverse collection of flowers and plants.
Sunset Hill County Farm, Porter County

True to its name, Sunset Hill County Farm provides an ideal setting for watching day turn to night. The elevated position of this historic farm offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Rolling hills and pastoral scenes create a peaceful backdrop for sunset viewing. The Winter Lights Drive-Through may still be taking place as people drive through to see the holiday lights. This is a great place to go for a walk to see the last sunset of 2024.
Rogers Lakewood Park, Valparaiso

This Porter County park offers a serene inland lake setting for sunset watching. The western-facing shoreline provides excellent views across the water, with trees framing the colorful sky. Multiple viewing areas, including a fishing pier and beach area, give visitors options for finding their perfect spot. The park’s quiet atmosphere makes it ideal for those seeking a peaceful sunset experience.
Pine Lake, LaPorte

One of LaPorte’s chain of lakes, Pine Lake offers some of the area’s most beautiful sunset views over water. The lake’s clear surface creates stunning reflections of the sunset colors, doubling the visual impact. Several access points around the lake provide different perspectives, with the western shore offering perfect viewing spots. Stop by for dinner at T-Bones Pier 11 and watch the sunset as you dine, but call ahead if you’re planning a visit on New Year’s Eve.
Northwest Indiana’s diverse landscape provides an array of unique locations for watching the day’s end. Whether you prefer the dramatic lake views along Michigan City’s pier, the natural serenity of Beverly Shores, or the pastoral beauty of inland locations like Sunset Hill Farm, each spot offers its own special perspective on this daily natural phenomenon. Consider visiting different locations throughout the year to experience how changing seasons affect the sunset’s character and colors. Remember that while photos are wonderful mementos, taking time to simply be present and enjoy nature’s daily light show can be a truly memorable experience. Enjoy the last sunset of 2024 NWI!
