Key Takeaways:
- Give opportunities for your customers to leave feedback.
- Feedback can sometimes be difficult to hear but so critical to learn from.
- Use your mission, goals, vision, and values to evaluate feedback.
- Let your customers know that you heard them.
With almost twenty years of business experience, I have learned one paramount strategy: your customers will tell you exactly how to succeed. Smart business owners know how to listen, evaluate, and act. I want to share how I’ve used this strategy in my own business and how you can adapt it to your business.
Feedback Equals Growth
If you are reading this post and you are thinking to yourself that your customers don’t provide much feedback, I’d ask you, are you presenting the opportunity for feedback? Remember, the best communication is always two-way. Are you giving your customers or clients the option to provide feedback?
Perhaps you are already accepting feedback, but are there ways that you can enhance it? Cast a wide net for feedback beyond basic surveys and collect insights through social media, in-store or in-office conversations, customer service interactions, and online reviews. Each channel reveals different aspects of the customer experience.
Now, collecting feedback can be a humbling process. I don’t believe that there is a business owner out there who has not poured their heart and soul into their business. Hearing critical or negative feedback can be soul-crushing, especially after working so hard, but remember that feedback can be a gift. As business owners, sometimes we are simply too close to truly see a potential or current pain point for clients or customers. Although it can be incredibly difficult and painful, we must put our egos aside, do what is right for our business, and keep happy customers.

You have Feedback. Now What?
Not all feedback is created equal, and it can be challenging to determine what is constructive and what is opinion. So, you will need a plan in place to objectively evaluate customer feedback. Things to consider when implementing feedback:
- How often do you hear this feedback? Is it the same thing time and again?
- Where are you hearing this feedback? Are you hearing it online, in person, or through word of mouth?
- Is the customer or client a regular patron of your business?
- Calculate implementation costs of the feedback.
- Check alignment with your business goals to ensure that the implementation of this feedback works.

Actionable Feedback into Progress:
Try to collect all feedback in one place. We recommend a spreadsheet with product quality, customer service, and pricing categories. This organization reveals patterns you’d miss in isolation.
Hold weekly feedback reviews with your team. If you don’t have a team, enlist a trusted business advisor who can be objective. Having someone to bounce thoughts, feedback, and ideas against is a true business superpower. Select one actionable item at a time to improve.

Feedback Engaged, what is Next?
Most importantly, we close the feedback loop. Sharing “You Spoke, We Listened” updates across all channels shows customers that their voice matters. This lets them know you’re listening and you value them as a partner in the success of your business.
Remember: successful implementation requires consistent monitoring and adjustment. Start small, measure results, and scale what works.
Your customers are sharing their blueprint for your success. Are you listening?
